Now that over 30 years have elapsed, the truth can finally be revealed.
In the early 90s I was a big fan of glam rock / hair metal. πΈππ€
My second concert ever was a double bill with Poison and Warrant. You know: dudes with lots of long hair, makeup, tight leather, posturing, etc.
This stuff was wildly popular among certain populations, especially in Phoenix. Then, according to a story I heard second-hand from someone actually in one of these bands, these guys went from playing 10,000 seat arenas to 1,000 person crowds in the span of a week, after Beavis and Butthead dissed a kid wearing a Winger t-shirt.Β
I literally havenβt listened to this stuff since 1992. But I had a blast making a playlist celebrating the best, least cringeworthy material of this genre. Truth is, some of these musicians are technically amazing, AND the toxic masculinity is hard to get past. At best, the bands were having fun and not taking themselves or any of it too seriously. At worst, the objectification feels gross and glorification of underage sex seems reckless. (That Winger song has such a great groove, itβs a bummer the songwriter was so oblivious to why βsheβs old enough for meβ is not a great lyric to broadcast to fans.)
Anyway, if you can get past some of the eyebrow-raising moments, this is a fun playlist.
